Magpie FDRS takes on Targa Tas
After the fun of 4 days at the Melbourne National 4x4 show the Magpie team took the opportunity to "nip across the pond" to Tassie to meet up with 15 times competitor and former Tasmanian Rally Champion Lawrie Pitt and put the Magpie FDRS system through it's paces over some the renowned stages of the Targa Tas.
Despite freezing temperatures, (by Far North Queenslander standards), we were able to get some good runs in over the Hellyer Gorge and Cethanna Stages.
"We were pretty nervous about how the GPS would go" said Scott Collingwood MD of Magpie Motorsports, "We'd heard so much from so many different people about how bad the area was for GPS. When we stopped at the lookout at the top of Cethanna and saw the rugged hills and trees with a strip of bitumen running between them I was not confident at all but we plunged on none the less."
"We need not have worried as it turned out, the Grays-I GPS happily blinked away on the dash board and never gave a shiver the whole time. Much the same result in Hellyer too although there we did lose lock for a couple of seconds."
"We're now confident that the Magpie FDRS will perform as well if not better than any other GPS on the market and will be a reliable sensor for the rally competitor."
As a back up Magpie Motorsports is changing slightly how the RallyNav software runs.
"When using pace notes we are now giving more control over to the co-driver so that if the GPS does go down for an extended period they will be able to still navigate effectively through the stage. In fact you'll be able to do this even when the GPS is going well. Our software is all about being a USEFUL TOOL for the co-driver, not a co-driving robot."
